In the new age of social media with interaction through emails and blog sites, have we lost the importance of the emotional connection of a face to face experience? We may well communicate with someone on a networking website, twitter, linkedin or facebook without even knowing the sound of their voice. Don’t underestimate the power of personal communication, a warm handshake and eye-contact rather than relying on an internet connection. Computers may be a faster way to deli

Most of us aware of teenagers' brand obsession. I can remember trying to fob my son off with a pair of non-branded trainers that I'd stuck a Nike logo onto with superglue. I'm not sure where I'd got hold of the logo in the first place, but needless to say he wasn't convinced.
Branding has been in existence since medieval times as a mark of value, setting the product or service against competitors. Your brand is your most important asset and your guarantee of quality and reliabi

There’s something to be said for working for small clients. Sure, they don’t have the big bucks, but they do have something than money can’t buy – a passion for their product or service.
Remember, their business is their baby. They know it inside out and want to evangelise an indifferent target market. So they can - and do - get as excited by a great idea as we do.
Small businesses and small marketing consultancies mirror each other’s virtues. We both have short decision making chains, so when…

Yes it can happen to anyone, Gordon Brown is today facing calls for an internal investigation into claims of bullying at No. 10. Somewhat embarrassingly for the Government, the Chief Exec of the National Bullying Help Line has publicly stated that they have received several telephone calls from No 10 staff allegedly regarding claims of bullying despite these claims having already been formally denied by No.10. So what to do when your employees start calling the National Bullying helpline? It

Conservative party plans for worker cooperatives in the public sector sound sensible for improving the commitment to service and morale of workers.. But what about the overheads? I can't imagine the civil servants not having to keep an eye on them to monitor their quality. As those who manage other staff know, its a manager's job to ensure commitment and morale and to monitor costs and quality anyway.

Is love in the air, or is Saint Valentine's Day now nothing more than what is known as a Hallmark holiday in America, existing primarily for commercial purposes. Wikipedia describes it as an annual holiday held on February 14th, celebrating love and affection between intimate companions and suggests it's traditionally a day when flowers, chocolates and greeting cards are exchanged.
We're confronted with the traditional sight of hearts, doves and cupids, with advertisers or soci

In business in Kent or the South East? If yes, please read.................
Would it amaze or disappoint you that a whole year had gone by, yet not much had changed?

“We’re happy with our existing supplier.”
“We have no plans to review our roster at present. Please feel free to contact us in six months.”
Speak to some marketing directors and all the talk about maximising value for money seems to be just that – talk. Odd, given the current climate.
The people who are interested in finding out more, even if it just means a fleeting visit to your website and a few minutes on the phone, have tended to be from smaller companies, the not-a-household-name-quite-…

Stop glancing scornfully at yourself in the mirror. No-one else is as critical as you, so you have the control and power to transform the way you think and feel about yourself, and the ability to express that feeling to others. Your mind should be working with you, not against you…

Believe it or not the secret to a happy, fulfilled life isn’t about having huge piles of money in the bank, a luxury home (and envious neighbours) and a stressfully competitive lifestyle. It’s about being able to be the person you are meant to be – someone who is happy in their own skin, and content with the life they are living. To achieve that state of just ‘being’ you firstly have to recognise the changes that need to be made. Then you have to possess the courage to go out there and make them…

Personnel Today recently reported on the numbers of vexatious litigants presenting dubious claims to the Employment Tribunal. In plain english this means people who make claims in the Employment Tribunal against a company usually for discrimination when they have no basis at all for their claim. Most of the time, these claims arise from recruitment advertisements which use phrases such as "recent graduate" "energetic person" etc which are seen to exclude a proportion of the population and conseq…

Someone said to me yesterday "employment law is such a minefield..." and even as an employment lawyer I would have to agree. times are tough and many employers are having to make difficult decisions about the future of their businesses. So a few top tips to bear in mind. To avoid a costly trip to the employment tribunal, employers should always put staff at risk - give proper written notice that their jobs might be ending. This is usually followed by consultation when both sides should look at a…
