Yes it can happen to anyone, Gordon Brown is today facing calls for an internal investigation into claims of bullying at No. 10. Somewhat embarrassingly for the Government, the Chief Exec of the National Bullying Help Line has publicly stated that they have received several telephone calls from No 10 staff allegedly regarding claims of bullying despite these claims having already been formally denied by No.10. So what to do when your employees start calling the National Bullying helpline? It might in fact be a positive thing that your staff turn to helplines for advice and support in situations of bullying in the workplace. It illustrates good staff handbooks, HR training and well drafted contracts of employment which often provide details of helplines and encourage a culture of openess in dealing with such matters in the workplace.
It is of course really important to deal with any complaint of bullying immediately. Employment Tribunals have long dealt with cases of bullying which in the worst instances have been ignored, left to fester and resulted in potentially life threatening psychological damage to the victims. When dealing with complaints of bullying every care should be taken to avoid compounding the matter, ensuring that independent persons (if at all possible) carry out any investigation, grievance and/or disciplinary proceedings. In many cases, often making minor changes in the workplace environment can resolve the matter and Tribunals will expect to see reasonable attempts to stop the bullying.
